Public opinion

Public opinion: the set of beliefs and judgments shared by a political community on matters of common interest.

Public opinion is the set of beliefs, valuations, and judgments shared by a political community on matters of common interest. Habermas (The Structural Transformation of the Public Sphere, 1962) reconstructed its emergence in 18th-century English coffee houses as a sphere of public reason mediating between state and society. Modern polls measure it quantitatively; critical theory (Bourdieu) warns against reducing it to percentages.
